While Milford Sound attracts the majority of day-trip buses, discerning wilderness lovers head to Doubtful Sound (Patea). Accessible only via a boat trip across Lake Manapouri followed by a coach trip over Wilmot Pass, its isolation preserves an extraordinary sense of solitude.
